I wish I could say that the best time to plant trees is anytime! I mean, couldn’t the earth use more trees?

Not only are they inspirational to look at, but trees also do plenty of good. They eliminate pollution from the air, decrease heating costs by 50%. Trees also reduce stress levels.

To take complete advantage of the benefits of trees, set them up to succeed by planting them at the correct time during the year. Find out the best time of year to plant various types of trees!

Honestly, fall is the best time to plant new trees. Usually, the end of August, September, and October are the ideal months. Though, it depends on when it honestly feels like fall. As long as the hottest days of summer are over and the earth isn’t frozen yet, you can still plant trees.
Planting Trees in the Fall

Planting trees in the fall when there’s a reduced chance of drought or the scorching sun damaging newly planted, fragile trees. Plus, the chilly temps help inspire new root growth. Since trees center on growing new roots in fall, planting new trees now aids them in having sturdier roots.

While fall is usually best for planting trees, our Rochester arborists are going to provide you with some information. Learn the perfect time of year to plant various types of trees.
When is the best time to plant?

  • Fruit trees? Plant fruit trees in early spring to evade winter damage.
  • Evergreens or pine trees? Since evergreen trees don't go undeveloped, plant them in the spring or fall. You will be okay as long as the weather isn't hot.
  • Maple trees? (Red maple, Japanese maple, and more) Plant these in fall.
  • Dogwood, Magnolia, willow or birch trees? Since these require more time to set up, it is best to plant in the spring and make sure to accurately water during the summer.

Planting a New Tree

Plant your new tree as soon as you’re able to for its best chance of surviving. Or else, place it in a dark, cool place that’s nowhere near direct sunlight or wind. Also, keep the roots moist to encourage growth.

Before you start digging, call your utility company to make sure there are no wires or pipes nearby.

Pay very close attention when placing the tree near the root flare. Putting the root flare too deep is a substantial tree-planting error.

Follow these suggestions to bring beautiful and healthy trees to your yard!
